Ruth Harper is founder and principal at NourishMentor, specializing in intuitive eating, eating disorders, and sports nutrition.
Ruth understands that her clients have real lives with real challenges - she is a real person herself! She coaches clients individually to set clear goals, make balanced and informed choices, and get on a path to a flourishing future. Her clients create personalized, realistic, and achievable plans for health and wellness that lead to both short and long term success - nourishing their bodies through changes in their knowledge, attitudes and choices. Ruth enjoys working with people who are just starting out in their journey to good health, and with those who want to fine tune their approach toward food.
In addition to her counseling experience, Ruth has held staff positions in two major hospitals, where she practiced as a Clinical Dietitian, evaluating and instructing hospitalized adults and children with illnesses and injuries including heart disease, diabetes, renal failure, and head injuries. She is the mother of two children and a former Division 1 collegiate athlete (track & cross-country). In her spare time, she loves to hike and run, watch her sons play sports, study the Bible with other women, read, and eat great food.
Personally, Ruth has overcome eating issues of her own. A body-conscious teen, she struggled with unhealthy eating attitudes and behaviors that continued into adulthood, despite her growing nutrition knowledge and clinical experience. It took significant personal growth for her to understand and apply intuitive eating skills, leading to real freedom in her eating, body image, and health.

At NourishMentor, we believe that food is to be enjoyed, but kept in a healthy position in life. Food is the fuel that we use to keep ourselves going; it is support for the goals and purposes of your life. Choosing food wisely is important, but thinking about eating should not dominate your life.
It is easy to read the popular literature and get overwhelmed with all the conflicting and seemingly life-altering nutrition messages. If you tried to do everything that is recommended in the media, it would be impossible! Ruth sifts through the current scientific literature and shares with clients which behaviors might be recommended and what can be ignored. Nutrition is not an exact science, and recommendations must be individualized.
Ruth strives to meet clients where they are, consider their lifestyles and preferences, and help them incorporate sound nutritional practices into their lives. She does not condemn, but encourages clients to take positive, sustainable steps toward a healthy relationship with food.
Trained as a health coach through Wellcoaches, Ruth and uses Motivational Interviewing, Appreciative Inquiry, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Internal Family Systems techniques to help clients achieve their goals. These approaches are supported by the medical literature to be effective in producing lasting behavior change, far beyond simple nutrition education.
